Designing Employability-Focused Digital Learning

Great learning experiences don't just deliver knowledge—they build confidence, capability and future opportunity.

The client

RMIT University is a global university of technology, design and enterprise, recognised for its strong industry partnerships and focus on preparing students for future careers. Through innovative teaching and digital learning, RMIT equips students with practical skills that extend beyond traditional degree programs.

The challenge:

RMIT University sought to expand its suite of digital micro-credentials by developing short, engaging learning experiences that would strengthen students’ employability and professional communication skills.

The challenge was to create academically rigorous online courses that balanced educational integrity with an engaging learner experience, while aligning with the University’s broader employability strategy and digital learning environment.

Our approach:

Affect Media was engaged to design and develop a suite of four standalone micro-credentials focused on personal branding and professional communication.

Working closely with university stakeholders, the project translated educational objectives into practical online learning experiences that supported student success beyond the classroom.

The engagement included:

  • Curriculum design and learning architecture
  • Instructional design
  • Development of all learning content
  • Assessment design and learning activities
  • Learner pathway development
  • Educational resource creation
  • Digital learning strategy
  • Advice on platform implementation and student experience
  • Stakeholder consultation and project management

The project combined educational design principles with strategic communication, ensuring the learning experiences were both academically robust and highly engaging.

The outcome:

All four micro-credentials were delivered on time and to brief.

During the years they were offered, they became some of the most popular micro-credentials undertaken at RMIT University, providing students with practical communication, personal branding and career development skills that complemented their academic studies.

The project demonstrated the value of combining instructional design with strategic communication to create learning experiences that deliver measurable educational outcomes.
